It is possible that Spotify only wants its own solution, but according to the company on the forum, the reason is problems with the audio drivers that are not compatible and that "it looks like a major project that we will not be able to carry out in the foreseeable future".

 

With AirPlay 2, Apple offers multi-room support, Siri voice control, and enhanced cache. We have not heard that it is a thing that the streaming technology is complicated to implement, but it can be challenging with both the audio formats Spotify uses and the drivers, which they mention. In any case, one thing is for sure: do not expect support this year and probably not next year either.
