Mercedes-Benz's new Roadster stands out with infotainment on the tilt screen

Large touch screens have become common in new cars. The larger the screens, the fewer opportunities you have to differentiate yourself from the competition. Maybe that's why Mercedes-Benz in the new 2022 AMG SL Roadster has taken the screen out of the dashboard and anchored it to the center console where they let it tilt electronically up and down.

11.9-inch infotainment
Mercedes-Benz says that they have designed the 11.9-inch standing touch screen in this way to reduce glare - the AMG SL Roadster is after all a convertible - but it can also be a smart little trick to stand out from Tesla.

The design is a bit more retro than might be expected of a modern Mercedes, but there is a lot of technology. "Hyperanalog" refers to designs that combine analog shapes and controls with digital elements, but the interior has retained traditional SL themes that give a comfortable feeling of performance and luxury without losing the original 300SL minimalism.

Good for topless driving
The instrument cluster is located in a 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel. It is protected by a kind of "flying wing" -inspired visor that will dampen sun reflexes - a must for those who drive topless.

Symbiosis between soft and hard goods
Installing larger screens in newer cars requires more of the software. The car manufacturers have enlisted the help of Google and others who can do so - and now the symbiosis between soft and hard goods is starting to take hold, as it has done in the smartphone market. It can pave the way for new exciting ideas in the future.

We have to assume that Mercedes has hung up the infotainment screen so well that it does not start to creak when you end up on a "real gravel road" - as my son enthusiastically called it.
