Snapchat employees must have snatched the users' data and images

"They have abused their access," sources say.

"They have abused their access," sources say.

In a report from Motherboard, employees across several Snapchat departments can see stored snaps, locations, phone numbers, and email addresses through a tool called SnapLion.

Started several years back
To Motherboard, one of the sources says that several times employees of the company abused the tool, but the sources do not address the scope of it. In total, the four former Snap employees newspaper talked to in addition to one who still works in the company, all confirmed the existence of the tool. Two of the former employees believe it happened already several years back.

Snap is not the only one
An email Motherboard has obtained reveals that an employee uses the tool to search up a user's email address without this being government-related work in any way. Snapchat has not commented on the case to date.

Snapchat is not alone in having such a tool that can be used to sneak users' information and data: Facebook kicked in in 2019 a security employee to use personal data to stalk women.
