The Onavo VPN service has received the same treatment on Android as on iOS and is now being removed from Google Play half a year after Apple removed the application from its store.

Onavo was marketed as a VPN app that would limit other applications from using a lot of data and protecting personal information through a secured network, while actually contributing to Facebook's market research. Such surveys were based on monitoring users' time spent, a summary of the amount of mobile data and WiFi used on various applications as well as the device used.

The application is not only deleted but the entire Onavo program must, according to a spokesperson for the company, be terminated:

"Market research helps companies develop better products for their customers. We shift our focus to premium-based market research, which means we end the Onavo program. ”

According to TechCrunch, Facebook's insight into the users' great interest in WhatsApp was crucial for the company buying up the messaging service.

It was also TechCrunch who recently released a report that states that the company used code from Onavo to create an application called "Facebook Research". This application paid Facebook people to use, in exchange for access to their data.
