The result can be a battery that lasts a decade.
One of the biggest problems with today's batteries is that they degrade over time. Often faster than one could wish.
It means that the battery life on the smart device deteriorate as fast as you start using it - not literally, of course.
Researchers at Harvard have developed a new battery technology that can facilitate the batteries that keep much longer than today. The technology is based on what is called "flow battery" and research has adapted the structure of electrolyte in these batteries so that they are water soluble. This means that the batteries can be filled with neutral water above a corrosive or toxic substance.

Not too smart devices in the first place
The result is a battery that loses only 1 percent after 1000 charge cycles. It is very impressive compared to current batteries. Apple reviews 1000 cycles as "maximum" for several of its laptops. (External link).
The only disadvantage of batteries called "flow battery" is that they currently are not equally suitable for mobile devices, but may work well in larger installations such as solar and wind power.
