Middlemen bought affordably, sold expensively
The background is that in 2013 and 2014, the Windows manufacturer should have sold software like Word and Excel to medium-sized companies with big discounts. These intermediaries should then have sold the same software to the Hungarian authorities at a much higher price.

The "surplus" from this is claimed to have been granted to employees in state-owned equipment in the country, probably people who participated in purchasing decisions.

As the Wall Street Journal points out, it is illegal for US companies to deal with bribery and corruption abroad.

Four have been fired
Microsoft says to the site that they cooperate closely with the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The company has carried out internal investigations and has dismissed four people affiliated with the case, writes the news media. Among them is Microsoft Hungary's country manager, Istvan Papp.

"We are committed to complying with ethical business practices and will not rely on these standards," said David Howard, the company's chief lawyer, in a statement to the Wall Street Journal.
